Devlog #1 (Journeys & Jawless)

First devlog!

I'm sure this formatting is going to be terrible but I'm hoping that after a few more devlogs it will work itself out. I want to get myself in the habit of posting devlogs at least twice a week for a few reasons. One of course is to keep anyone who has any interest in the game knowledge on what's to come or has come, as well as provide comfort that the project is actively being worked on. Another big reason is to keep myself in check and make sure I get at least one significant implementation or update done in a reasonable time. So let's get into the Devlog #1!!

Jawless (New Character)

Jawless is one of the earlier characters that the player will come across during their adventures that will hopefully leave a lasting impact and have them returning to him over and over again!

  • Character Type: Undead
  • Division: Independent
  • Job: Hoarder (is a lazy ass and doesn't have a real job)
  • Birthday: July 18
  • Collects: Snow Globes

Jawless can be found around New Ingotonican. If he is not in his house, he can usually be found around the graveyard, or wandering around in the woods. Befriending Jawless will eventually lead him to giving you some of his Mystery Meat which YOU can choose to eat or not. Not only that but he may also let you into his home, which once again YOU can choose if you really want to enter that hoard house or not.

Journeys (Feature)

I have been focusing lots of my efforts on Journeys for the past day and a half so figured I should share a little bit about it and what is planned for it.

To summarize it, Journeys are missions that the player will go on from point A to point B in a ship (ground or air). The player will be given X amount of Citizens to take care of on the Journey and who will aid the player in battles (normal party members will not embark on the Journey). Players will be given a general overview of the Journey such as...

  • Level 5-15
  • Ship Size: Small
  • Citizens: 2
  • Distance: 50 Miles

This information will hopefully help the player gauge if they are ready to attempt it, as well as how much fuel and rations to bring. Fuel is the first resource the player must purchase before they set out. The longer the Journey, the more fuel used, so it's up to the player to determine how much fuel they would like to buy at the start. The same thing goes for rations but rations are used to heal/revive the Citizens. None of the Citizens are trained in combat so they will be hurt a lot! To stop the player from just maxing out on both fuel and rations, any extra resources at the end of the Journey will be left on the ship and used by the next crew (so you lose it). There will also be upgrades the player can unlock throughout the game which enhance certain features of the ship and crew, such as free fuel at the start or an increase in ration storage. Once all the upgrades are equipped on the ship and the fuel and rations are bought the Journey will began. There are lots of different events that will/can happen during the Journey, but they can mostly be generalized into 3 groupings.

  1. Harmful (non-combat)
    1. Ship is robbed by pirates and steals 2 fuel.
    2. Bone Master (enemy) stops the ship and requires a donation of bones or else...
    3. A Citizen contracts a sickness and slowly loses HP.
    4. and many more!
  2. Benificial
    1. Found a new Citizen along the way to join the Journey.
    2. Come across a crashed ship and find 2 fuel.
    3. Get lucky and find a traveling merchant that can only be found on Journeys.
    4. and many more!
  3. Combat
    1. Attacked by Warp Vipers.
    2. Attacked by Clockwork (boss).
    3. Attacked by bandits (imprison one of your Citizens).
    4. and many more!

Surviving and completing the Journey will net the player initial rewards, as well as provide bonus rewards for the amount of Citizens who are still alive. The player is still able to die on the Journey so it should not be done without some planning.

One more bonus thing is progress on the player's character model!
